A new hospital will be built near Interstate 83 in southern York County, according to WellSpan.

Groundbreaking for the new hospital at 13515 Wolfe Road in Hopewell Township will be held Tuesday morning, the healthcare provider announced Friday. It is close to the Shrewsbury interchange (Exit 4) of I-83.

"This state-of-the-art, acute-care facility is designed to bring essential medical services closer to the residents of this part of York County, Pa., and nearby northern Maryland," the announcement states.

It will feature a 24/7 emergency department, 10-inpatient beds, diagnostic services, such as ultrasound, CT, X-ray and laboratory services, the announcement states.

Property adjacent to the Stonebridge Health Center along Wolfe Road was recently transferred to WellSpan for $4 million.

The WellSpan Shrewsbury Hospital is one of three new hospitals to be built across southcentral Pennsylvania over the next two years, it states. The project is in partnership with Emerus.

The new hospital is expected to open in late 2025.

WellSpan shared its plans last year to build three community hospitals

WellSpan announced last year that it plans to build three community hospitals in York and Cumberland counties to provide expanded access to inpatient care.

“As WellSpan continues to reimagine the face of healthcare, we recognize that it cannot always be a one-size-fits-all approach. To truly make healthcare more accessible for our neighbors in South Central Pennsylvania, we must always strive to meet them where they are,” Roxanna Gapstur, president and CEO of WellSpan Health, said at the time. “As part of our mission to serve all, these neighborhood hospitals will provide efficient, close-to-home access to low acuity emergency and hospital care.”

WellSpan has said the hospitals will be fully licensed and branded with its name. The facilities will be operated and staffed by Emerus, which has similar partnerships with other healthcare systems.

The community hospitals will be fully integrated with WellSpan systems, including the MyWellSpan patient portal, the healthcare system has said.
