LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — A line of showers and strong thunderstorms organized along a cold front over Lake Michigan. As the storms moved onto land, they entered a more favorable (warm and moist) environment, allowing the storms to strengthen as they tracked east.

The storms quickly moved into Mid-Michigan around 1 o’clock, prompting a severe thunderstorm warning in Eaton County at 1:26 pm. Following this, a tornado warning was issued for Eaton and Ingham Counties at 1:41 pm due to radar-indicated rotation. However, there were no reports of a tornado on the ground while the warning was in place.

We have minimal damage and storm reports across Mid-Michigan. The most common report in Mid-Michigan was surrounding the Lansing area with reports of hail 1″ in diameter.

Outside of the severe thunderstorms we saw in Eaton and Ingham counties, there were strong winds embedded in this line of storms. Those strong winds caused multiple power outages in the area, most of which occurred in Jackson County, with over 5,000 customers without power as of 4:00 pm. As of 4:00 pm, we have 174 customers without power in Ingham County, 50 in Calhoun County, and 400 in Livingston County.

The cold front that sparked generated the strong to severe storms we saw today will drop temperatures into the 50s for Friday and the weekend. Partly cloudy conditions move in for the weekend, with the potential for frost Sunday morning as temperatures fall into the low 30s.
