ARCADIA — The region has 15 days of extra education set for its youth starting Saturday.

Suncoast Remake Learning Days takes place from April 20-May 4 and will include more than 300 free events in Charlotte, DeSoto, Manatee and Sarasota counties, according to a news release.

The news release called it “the largest global learning festival celebrating the shared wonder of learning.

“Suncoast Remake Learning Days 2024 aims to ignite a multigenerational passion for shared learning across Charlotte, DeSoto, Manatee and Sarasota counties with learning experiences designed for the entire family,” it stated. “For 15 consecutive days, a diverse group of Suncoast creators, schools, nonprofits and civic organizations will help children and their families unlock worlds of knowledge and fun by engaging in dynamic learning experiences outside of the classroom.”

The events include six themes: arts, outdoor learning, maker, science, technology and youth voice, the news release stated.

Patterson Foundation President/CEO Debra Jacobs is also excited about the events.

“Remake Learning Days aims to connect people and organizations by supporting engaging and high-quality events that spark curiosity and allow families in the region to learn and grow together,” Jacobs said in the news release. “These multi-cultural experiences help strengthen the community as a whole and contribute to making the Suncoast region a thriving community for people of all ages.”

The learning events are called “robust, accessible, open to the public” and — thanks to The Patterson Foundation — free.

“The inspiration for the festival is a mounting body of research indicating shared community exploration and learning improves students’ academic performance and social skills, exposing them to a world of opportunities, interests, and life-changing experiences,” the news release stated.

An app called SRLD2024 to help participants can be downloaded in English or Spanish through GooglePlay. It has a listing of events and allows people to create a schedule and other aspects.

Among the events are:

“Big Truck Day” at CoolToday Park in Wellen Park, hosted by Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources.Punta Gorda Visual Art Center hosting an event and tour where participants paint a rock to share it with the world in the rock garden and check out the “Blooms and Bugs” elementary art show.Learn about veterinary medicine in Arcadia through hands-on learning with animals and hearing from a practicing veterinarian at “Animal Fest at AHA,” hosted by Arcadia Housing Authority.Visit all seven continents and 35 countries through the “Around the World in 180 Minutes” event at North Port’s Cranberry Elementary School, which also has more than 50 community outreach organizations.Tour the Bishop Science Museum in Bradenton and receive free materials and books to support learning at home.

A full listing is at SuncoastRemakeLearningDays.org.

“Learning happens everywhere,” Beth Duda said.

Duda is the director of Suncoast Campaign for Grade-Level Reading and Suncoast Remake Learning Days for The Patterson Foundation.

“Expanding access beyond the classroom to all kinds of hands-on learning opportunities helps kids and their families to be life-long learners,” Duda said in the news release. “These free, family-friendly events provide wonder, discovery, and amazing, memorable experiences for families to share, right in their own neighborhoods.”
