NWS reports 12 tornadoes in the Tri-State area from April 2 storms

HENDERSON, Ky. (WEHT) – The National Weather Service (NWS) reports that twelve tornadoes were present in the Tri-State area during the storms on April 2.

According to NWS, this was the most tornadoes in a single event across its region since Halloween 2013, when there were 19 tornadoes that day. The NWS reports that it has confirmed seven EF-2, 11 EF-1 and 1 EF-0 tornadoes. NWS officials say the longest path was 14.7 miles with the tornado that crossed from Posey through Vanderburgh and into Warrick counties. The area NWS gave for this was in the area of St. Wendel and Hilldale.

National Weather Service confirms multiple tornadoes

NWS gave the following details for each tornado that impacted our Tri-State area:

  • Tornado #6 – New Haven, IL (South)
    • Impacted Gallatin County, IL and Posey County, IN
      • Here several large trees were uprooted, one crushing a small brick building. One manufactured home was severely damaged and a nearby outbuilding had a part of its roof removed. Moving eastward the tornado did mainly tree damage as passed south of the community of New Haven.
        • Lasted from 5:22 to 5:29 a.m. CDT

  • Tornado #7 – Harmonie State Park, IN
    • Impacted White County, IL and Posey County, IN
      • Hundreds of trees uprooted or snapped. Several outbuildings/sheds were damaged or destroyed. Minor to moderate roof damage to several homes.
        • Lasted from 5:30 to 5:43 a.m. CDT

        • No deaths nor injuries
  • Tornado #8 – Blairsville, IN (South)
    • Impacted Posey County
      • Hundreds of trees were snapped or uprooted. Dozens of outbuildings were damaged or destroyed. Minor to moderate damage to several homes.
        • Lasted from 5:37 to 5:48 a.m. CDT

        • No deaths nor injuries
  • Tornado #9 – St. Wendel and Hillsdale, IN
    • Impacted Posey, Vanderburgh and Warrick counties
      • The most significant damage occurred in the St Wendel area where several homes had their entire roofs removed. Minor structural damage occurred to a few homes in the Hillsdale area near Hwy 41. Numerous outbuildings or sheds were damaged or destroyed along the path. There were hundreds of trees that were snapped or uprooted as well.

  • Tornado #10 – Darmstadt, IN (North)
    • Impacted Vanderburgh and Warrick counties
      • Hundreds of trees were snapped or uprooted. Dozens of outbuildings were damaged or destroyed. Minor to moderate damage to several homes. Electrical power poles were snapped.
        • Lasted from 5:48 to 6:03 AM CDT

        • No deaths nor injuries
  • Tornado #11 – Elberfeld, IN #1 (South)
    • Impacted Vanderburgh and Warrick counties
      • Dozens of trees were snapped or uprooted. Many wooden power poles were snapped along Hwy 41 south of the I-64 interchange. Several outbuildings were damaged or destroyed. Minor to moderate damage to a few homes.
        • Lasted from 5:54 to 6:01 AM CDT

  • Tornado #12 – Elberfeld, IN #2 (South)
    • Impacted Vanderburgh and Warrick counties
      • One home suffered minor roof damage. Several outbuildings damaged or destroyed. Dozens of trees were snapped or uprooted.
        • Lasted from 5:58 to 6:03 a.m. CDT

        • No deaths nor injuries
  • Tornado #13 – Lynnville, IN (South)
    • Impacted Warrick County
      • Significant shingle damage occurred to a home and a large barn was destroyed. A few other homes observed minor damage. Dozens of trees were snapped or uprooted.
        • Lasted from 6:05 to 6:13 a.m. CDT

  • Tornado #16 – Uniontown, KY (South)
    • Impacted Union County
      • Considerable damage occurred to several homes in the Cottingham Acres Road area along Hwy 130. This included significant roof damage or homes being shifted off their foundation. Dozens of trees were uprooted or snapped along the path.
        • Lasted from 5:34 to 5:40 a.m. CDT

  • Tornado #17 – Morganfield, KY (North)
    • Impacted Union County
      • A small shed was destroyed and a home suffered shingle and facia damage. The tornado severely damaged the roof and walls of a large, newly-built farm outbuilding. The tornado damaged a carport near a home. Several trees also suffered damage to large limbs along the path.
        • Lasted from 5:41 to 5:42 a.m. CDT

  • Tornado #18 – Sullivan, KY
    • Impacted Union County
      • A large farm outbuilding was severely damaged. The tornado did roof damage to two homes on Cowan Road. The tornado snapped several large trees at their base. One tree fell onto a double-wide manufactured home, where falling debris struck and injured the head of its occupant.
        • Lasted from 5:46 to 5:47 a.m. CDT

  • Tornado #19 – SE of Chandler, IN
    • Impacted Warrick County
      • Three homes suffered substantial damage to their roofs. Hundreds of trees were either snapped or uprooted in the path.
        • Lasted from 6:04 to 6:06 a.m. CDT

        • No deaths nor injuries
