Harrison County Board of Education votes to consolidate 5 of 6 proposed schools

CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) — The Harrison County Board of Education (BOE) voted on its large-scale school consolidation proposal Tuesday night.

On Tuesday, the BOE voted on the following consolidation plans:

  • Close Liberty High School and merge into Robert C. Byrd High School: PASSED 3–2
  • Close and consolidate Washington Irving Middle School: PASSED 4–1
  • Close and consolidate Mountaineer Middle School: PASSED 4–1
  • Close and consolidate North View Elementary School: PASSED 3–2
  • Close and consolidate Salem Elementary School: FAILED 0–5
Harrison County Superintendent addresses consolidation concerns

Under these changes, Liberty High School will close its building and merge its student body with Robert C. Byrd High School. Washington Irving Middle School will merge with Mountaineer Middle School and begin operations in Liberty’s building, and North View Elementary is expected to move into the current Mountaineer Middle building. Salem Elementary will not undergo any changes.

These new changes will go into effect during the 2025–26 school year.
