A suspect is dead after a fatal deputy-involved shooting in Western North Carolina, over the weekend.

The incident occurred after the Henderson County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a man threatening people in the North Mills River Campground area with a firearm just after 6pm Saturday.

Upon arrival, Deputies chased the suspect, now identified as 29-year-old Hayden Elias Brook, until he crashed the van he was driving and reportedly fired at deputies.

Deputies returned fire, and Brook was declared dead at the scene. The involved deputies are now on administrative leave as North Carolina SBI investigates the shooting, as is standard protocol.
