Carter County Constables to host in-service training

Local constables will have the opportunity to receive mandatory training this month in Carter County.

“It’s mandatory,” said Carter County Constable Ken Potter. “Constables take in-service each year. Our training meets state criteria for certification.”

Kent Harris, president of the East Tennessee Constables Association, said the in-service training will be held at the Carter County Emergency Management Agency in Elizabethton. The class will cover all the mandatory topics that constables are required to take.

Some of the instructors for the class are attorneys and retired police officers. Potter said the instructors have “years of experience.”

The class will start on April 22 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Weapon qualification is scheduled for Saturday, May 4.

The cost of the class is $100, and diplomas will be awarded on completion of training.

Potter said the training meets or exceeds state law for in-service training.

Constables must complete 40 hours of in-service course time for each 12-month period during which the constable holds office, beginning on the date the constable is sworn into office, according to the Tennessee state law.

The law states, “Courses offered shall contain information pertinent to the various aspects of civil and criminal process, firearms certification, and other issues relative to the powers and duties of constables.”
