Community Action of Etowah County is accepting applications through May 11 for its annual home gardening program for low-income families.

The program, according to a news release from the agency, seeks to help those families “move towards self-sufficiency through planting home gardens to supplement their dietary needs.”

Those who qualify will receive $40 vouchers that can be redeemed at Marvins, 301 N. 12th St, Gadsden, or Farmtown, 411 Sardis Road, Boaz, for seeds or vegetable plants and fertilizer.

The monthly income limits for participants are $1,569 for one person; $2,129 for two people; $2,690 for three people, $3,250 for four people; $3,811 for five people; $4,371 for six people; and $560 per additional person in larger families.

Applications are accepted between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Community Action office at 624 Broad St. in Gadsden.

Applicants must bring the Social Security cards of all family members; a photo ID of the head of household; verification of the household’s gross income (from SSI, SSDI, the VA, check stubs, child support payments) for the previous month; and food stamp allotment letters.
