Martin County Schools’ third College and Career Fair, held Wednesday, March 27, perfectly illustrated the district’s goal to provide every student with every possible opportunity.

The theme for 2024 — The Game of Life.

Students in grades seven through 12 had a chance to check out over 50 businesses and post-high school education opportunities represented onsite.

“It’s really eye-opening,” said high school senior Sean Staley.

Before the event, Stately told local media he had decided on his path, but now has much to think about. He was also surprised by the number of opportunities in the county and nearby.

One of the main goals of the annual event is to show students there are options for everyone, whether you are going to work, college, or the military after graduation. Several businesses were ready to talk to students about coming to work as soon as they graduate.

“The career fair is the perfect opportunity for students to see what is available in the job world,” explained Jason Wynne, MCS Career Development Coordinator. “Since we are located in a rural area, sometimes students aren’t exposed to the job adventures that are near geographically. They also may not know the successful businesses right here at their door, such as Manning Masonry.”

The event is a tremendous exercise in developing soft skills for middle and high school students. Interaction with potential employers and college recruiters was a welcomed experience for students such as sophomore Aneeka Reedy.

“It gives you a lot of insight into different careers and helps you reconsider some of your plans,” she explained. “It might help you figure out you have different interests in life.”

Although planned by MCS CTE staff, students played an important role. Under the guidance of their instructors, Food and Nutrition students from Riverside and South Creek High Schools prepared lunch for the participating exhibitors. And it was no boxed sandwich. Participants were treated to an elegant buffet meal with homemade dessert options.

“Allowing our Culinary Arts students to showcase their talents to a broad range of potential employers provides an opportunity for students to work together in a real corporate setting,” said Kristy Christenberry, MCS Career Technical Education Coordinator. “We had fantastic feedback from the vendors regarding the students’ meal preparation and execution.

Wynne added, “This event allows students to develop their soft skills, gauge their future interests, and acquire information that will help develop their career path.”

The fair was sponsored by; The Edwards Company (Spring Hope), Martin County Economic Development (Williamston), Gregory Poole (Raleigh), IPG (Everetts) and Manning Masonry (Williamston).
