Boone County cleaning up mudslides, damage after storms

BOONE COUNTY, WV (WOWK) – A portion of the roadway has started to slip in the Lens Creek area of Boone County, and that’s just one area of the flood damage in the county.

The slip is along Lens Creek Road and has taken brush and trees down the hill with it. Drivers going through the area should take caution as it is still a dangerous scene.

The slip wasn’t the only damage in Boone County. Residents are still in the thick of the storm’s aftermath. The deputy director of Boone County Emergency Management, Arch Griffith, tells WOWK 13 News that in the last 24 hours, they’ve had two water rescues and three mudslides, all forcing road closures.

One of the other two mudslides is on Route 3, which is blocking two lanes of traffic. It has damaged utility lines and knocked out power in the area. That road was reopened around noon today.

The second slip happened on Seng Creek Road near Garrison in the middle of the neighborhood. That slip also caused a temporary road closure. One person who lives on that road, Loren Daniel, said he prepared for yesterday’s storms by laying a line of sandbags in front of his yard to prevent flood waters from reaching his home. While it worked, he says he still came home to a pile of debris.

“When we got back, here’s what we have. Water running through the driveway, through the garage. We got sandbags out, lining the driveway. We had to shovel debris off the driveway,” said Daniel.

Since last night, the floodwaters have mostly receded in Boone County, and road conditions are just about back to normal.
