COVINGTON COUNTY, Miss. ( WHLT ) – The Covington County School District will have a new superintendent starting next school year.

Jon Chancelor will step up after the current superintendent, Babette Duty, retires at the end of June.

“I feel very blessed to be in this role now. I think that it’s an awesome responsibility, and I’m looking forward to working with the board, working with the teachers and staff of all the schools in the county, and just making the schools the best that they can possibly be,” said Chancelor.

He’s no stranger to Covington County Schools. Chancelor has worked for the district for 13 years, most recently serving as director of operations.

As superintendent, Chancelor said he’s focused on growing the district and improving academics.

“I would love to see the county schools continue to grow, continue to grow from a facility standpoint, continue to grow from an academic accountability standpoint,” he stated.

He also wants to create a positive environment for both staff and students.

“You want to create an environment to where people want to come to work every day. People are proud that they work in the district, in the schools where they work. I think that’s very important, and that’s the culture that I would like to help create,” Chancelor said.

He will officially become superintendent on July 1, 2024.
