Allegany County -- including Cumberland (pictured) -- was created off a portion of Washington County in 1789. In the Lenape Indian language, it translates to "beautiful stream." Baltimore Sun/TNS

Emergency phone lines went down in Allegany County on Thursday afternoon.

The Maryland Department of Emergency Management said around 2:30 p.m. that both 911 and administrative phone lines to the 911 center in Western Maryland were lost.

The 911 center can still be reached by calling 301-697-6506, the department said.
