RUSSELL COUNTY ( KSNT ) – A renovated historic home sitting on more than a dozen acres of land is up for grabs in Russell County.

Karon Lawrenz is selling a limestone house situated about 10 miles away from the nearby town of Dorrance in the Smoky Hills. This off-the-beaten-path home is known locally by the names of “The Seven Gables House” and “The House that Jack Built.” It is being marketed as a good option for those wanting to get out into the countryside and away from civilization.

Karon’s husband, Larry, has spent several months restoring the historic home. His job was made harder after the house collapsed during the renovation process.

“We think the wind had a lot to do with it,” Larry said. “Left on a Thursday night. When we returned it… my guys got there and said the house was laying in the basement.”

Larry and his coworkers reassembled the original limestone of the house piece by piece. He says the job required long hours but is ultimately worth it to save a piece of Kansas history.

“If you saw a picture of it before we started and if you see it now, you won’t know the difference,” Larry said. “Same size, same place.”

The property the home sits on was homesteaded in 1876 by John and Mary Chegwidden, according to the real estate company’s website . The house was later built in 1900 from limestone quarried from the nearby area. It served as a prominent location people could use to find their way through the middle of Kansas.

“The date stone on the house was 1900 even,” Larry said. “Kind of a landmark.”

Larry says the home’s amenities include a spacious underground area for use as a wine cellar, smokehouse or bar space. Oak floors have been laid throughout the house and a three-car garage was built nearby. The home also has modern electrical and water utilities.

“Four bedroom, four bath,” Larry said. “It’s designed if somebody wants to have a hunting lodge out there.”

The price of the home is currently set at $2.2 million. You can get in touch with Karon by sending an email to karonsre@sbcglobal.net or by calling 785-258-2900.

The house can be found at 3212 200th Street in Russell County. For more information on the property, click here .
