Before her passing, Breaux released a statement saying she wanted to focus on “enjoying the time I have left surrounded by my loved ones.” The statement recollected her proudest moments from serving nearly two decades as a statehouse senator.

These included her efforts to improve Indiana’s Black infant and mother mortality rates and access to healthy food while working to address historical poverty, gun violence and reproductive justice.

Breaux served in the Indiana Senate since 2006 and has also participated as a member of the Indiana Recycling Market Development Board and the Medicaid Advisory Commission. Breaux represents District 34, which includes portions of Center, Lawrence, Warren and Washington townships in Marion County.
