A Virginia county has unanimously voted to observe its Transgender Day of Visibility this year on Easter Sunday – causing many critics to speak out against the decision. According to Fox News, many people are looking at the move as “intentionally trying to offend Christians on the holiest of days.”
Last week, The Fairfax board of supervisors voted 9-0 in favor of the proclamation. As we all know, Easter will be held on March 31 this year which is typically the annual date of “Transgender Day of Visibility” according to LGBTQ+ advocates and organizations. But it seems like people wanted the date to be moved due to Easter falling on March 31. Supervisor Jimmy Bierman, a Democrat, spoke during the voting and said that he’s proud to recognize the trans community.
“I’m just very happy that we’re recognizing a community that has too often been pushed into the shadows and celebrating yet another community within our diverse tapestry here in Fairfax County.” Bierman added that the county wants “to make sure that everybody who’s a part of our community feels welcomed, feels loved and feels empowered.” However, Stephanie Lundquist-Arora – a Virginia mom and the Fairfax chapter leader of the Independent Women’s Network, a nonprofit organization slammed the board’s decision by sharing a statement to Fox News. “By voting to make Easter this year Transgender Visibility Day, they are intentionally trying to offend Christians on the holiest of days by forcing gender ideology down their throats,” she said. “This is reprehensible and unbecoming of our elected representatives.”
Transgender Day Of Visibility was first established in 2009 by transgender activist Rachel Crandall-Crocker as a response to the lack of visibility and representation of transgender individuals in society. It aims to celebrate the achievements and resilience of transgender people while also highlighting the ongoing struggles they face in terms of acceptance, rights, and equality.
One of the main goals of Transgender Day of Visibility is to empower transgender individuals to live authentically and proudly. By celebrating their identities and accomplishments, the day serves as a reminder that transgender people deserve respect and recognition for who they are.
Visibility is crucial for the transgender community as it helps challenge stereotypes and misconceptions, promote understanding and acceptance, and ultimately create a more inclusive society. By highlighting the diversity and richness of transgender experiences, Transgender Day of Visibility aims to combat discrimination and promote equality for all individuals, regardless of their gender identity.
