MADISON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – A Madison County teacher and baseball coach was selected as a finalist for a national award.

Jerry Dupuy starts off his mornings greeting students as they are dropped off.

“I love doing this. I say good morning to a lot of people and when you say that a lot, you start to believe it,” said Dupuy.

The World History teacher and Head Baseball Coach at Rosa Scott School was selected as one of eight finalists for the National High School Athletic Coaches Association (NHSACA) as an Assistant Coach of the Year.

Patrick Robey is one of several coaches who worked closely with Dupuy. Dupuy is an Assistant Coach at Madison Central High School.

The duo went on to win two state championships together.

“In this day and age, you have to be as much a mentor, a psychologist at times, and he does a good job of mentoring those kids and helping them with challenges they may have off the field as well,” said Robey, Madison Central’s Head Baseball Coach.

Coach Dupuy says he doesn’t do it for the recognition. But ultimately, he says, it’s an honor.

“I have a really good baseball team this year. They work hard. They do the right thing. It’s been a joy to work with those guys, and it is every year,” said Dupuy.
