Supreme Court Announces Trump Immunity Decision Plan

The Supreme Court announced it will decide whether former President Donald Trump is immune in Special Counsel Jack Smith’s election subversion case.

The federal trial will further be delayed as the Supreme Court announced it will decide if the Republican frontrunner has presidential immunity from the four felony charges that accuse him of conspiring to subvert the 2020 presidential election.

Justices agreed to have the case expedited and arguments will begin the week of April 22, according to CNN .  Earlier this month, the court heard oral arguments over a case deciding whether Trump could be disqualified from running for a second term under the 14th Amendment for allegedly inciting an insurrection.

Trump attorney’s had urged the court to pause the trial but not take up the case until the former president appeals the decision fully in a lower court. The process would have lasted weeks and significantly delayed the D.C. trial.

Smith requested the court decide on Trump’s immunity claims immediately in order to allow for the trial to move forward before the November presidential election.

The court’s decision to hear his immunity arguments marks the first time that the conservative-majority Supreme Court has become involved in Trump’s criminal cases since he was indicted last year.

Although the justices may rule against Trump, the move is seen as a victory for his legal team in delaying the trial which was originally scheduled for March 4th.

The Republican frontrunner, and likely nominee, faces three other criminal indictments in three separate jurdisctions for a variety of charges including his handling of classified material and attempting to overturn the election in Georgia.
