Maryland Teen Mom Discards Her Baby in the Woods: Attempted Murder Charges Filed

Maryland State News by Evan Green, Crime and Justice Bureau Chief

Maryland teen mom, Olivia Dee Rose Thompson, 19, is accused of attempted first- and second-degree murder, first and second-degree assault, and neglect of a minor as well as reckless endangerment and desertion of a minor after abandoning her newborn child in a small wooded area.

When a passerby heard a baby crying, they found the newborn in an area of woods.

After gathering evidence at the scene and canvassing the area further, Glen Burnie police identified Thompson as a possible suspect. During an interview with officers from the Child Abuse Unit, she was positively identified as the mother. She was taken to the hospital and offered crisis intervention and other services.

According to reports, the baby is doing well. Within 10 days of birth, Maryland has Safe Haven Laws that allow parents who are unable or unwilling to take care of an infant to leave it at a hospital or law enforcement station.

Anyone who invoked the Safe Haven law cannot be prosecuted under civil or criminal law as long as the child is not harmed.
