Senator Scott Wiener represents District 11 in the California State Senate.

District 11 includes all of San Francisco, Broadmoor, Colma, and Daly City, as well as portions of South San Francisco. Since being elected the Senator has written several controversial bills. The latest to inch closer into becoming law is the decriminalization of Psychedelic drugs.

Decriminalization of Psychedelic Drugs

Introduced earlier this year, Senate Bill 519 would allow the possession and sharing of certain hallucinogenic substances such as magic mushrooms, MDMA, LSD, ketamine and ibogaine for those 21 years and older.

Since its introduction Weiner removed the drug Ketamine from the list as others in the Senate were concerned about it being used as a possible date rape drug.

At the same time citizens are expressing concern that the legislation is a dangerous slide to the far left amid other factors occurring in the streets of California. Also, some are starting to scratch their heads over Senator Weiner’s legislative pen choices.

More Bills Authored By Scott Weiner

Last year Senator Weiner’s SB 145 passed, relaxing Sex Offender potential consequences. Under pre-existing law, the Sex Offender Registration Act, required a person convicted of one of certain crimes, as specified, to register with law enforcement as a sex offender while residing in California or while attending school or working in California, as specified.

Weiner’s bill exempts from mandatory registration under the act a person convicted of certain offenses involving minors if the person is not more than 10 years older than the minor and if that offense is the only one requiring the person to register.

SB 57 - Legalizes Overdose Prevention Programs (safe consumption sites) in San Francisco, Oakland and Los Angeles County.

SB 73 - Repeals certain mandatory minimum jail/prison sentences for drug offenses and provides judges with more discretion to order probation and other alternatives to incarceration.

SB 225 (Bodily Autonomy, Dignity and Choice Act) - Provides children (some of whom may identify as intersex) and their families a chance to make informed decisions about major surgeries to change variations in the appearance of genitalia and other sex characteristics.

SB 379 (Equitable and Inclusive UC Healthcare Act) - Ensures that University of California Health System (UC Health) contracts with healthcare facilities that allow UC staff practicing in those facilities to provide a full range of healthcare services, including reproductive and gender-affirming care.

SB 357 (Safer Streets for All Act) - Repeals discriminatory loitering law that targets sex workers and trans women of color.

SB 132- Supporting Incarcerated Transgender Individuals

Ensures that transgender people in custody have equal rights and protections and to help protect the human dignity and safety of all people in custody.

SB 145- Ending Discrimination Against LGBTQ People Regarding Sex Offender Registration

Sponsored by Equality California and the Los Angeles County District Attorney, SB 145 puts a stop to LGBTQ young people from being placed on the sex offender registry, when similarly situated young straight people are not.

SB 233- Improving Sex Worker Health and Safety

Prohibits the arrest of people involved in sex work when they come forward as a witness or victim of a specified violent and serious crime. It also provides that the possession of condoms may not be used as evidence to arrest someone for engaging in sex work.

JADED: I would think in times of such turmoil and tragedy in our state that our legislators would be focused on major issues affecting all Californians instead of their own special interests. I think part of the recall phenomena occurring with Gavin Newsom and George Gascon, is kind of a signal that the people of the state are no longer wanting to go along and get along with the direction the state is taking on social, political, and global issues. Hence the exodus.

Decriminalization of crimes, sex work, and drugs will do little to improve the lives of most Californians. Closing jails, open borders, and the lack of solutions for homelessness are just the tip of the iceberg of issues urgently needing attention by our legislators and local government.

Also, infrastructure- I keep trying to figure out why they are painting those bicycles in the streets before and after huge potholes- like, can we fix these potholes please? Gas 5.00/gallon, everything feels like the boiling point is tipping in California. Laws to free up more drug use, more sex work, and alternative liberalism is probably not what we need right now.

One thing I particularly notice about Scott Weiner is his tendency to use race based social injustices experienced by others to apply singular laws that only impact one special interest group. Off the backs of people who have really been affected. If he were so concerned about repealing laws that discriminate -that should be across the board. Not for just one community.

California recently lost one of 53 House seats after the 2020 Census found the Golden State’s population growth had slowed. Businesses are leaving along with people who are fed up with what feels like the government has abandoned its everyday law-abiding native citizen.

The standard and quality of life once held to proud Californians is vanishing before our eyes. Yes, it used to be California dreaming, but now with pipe dreams and psychedelic trips incoming, I’m sure for some its about to be a movie. A bad one!
