MINNEAPOLIS, MN — At 12 p.m., Thursday, June 17th, 2021, all members of the community are invited to attend a learning lab on redefining community safety hosted by the Minneapolis Office of Violence Prevention.

David Kennedy, the executive director of the National Network for Safe Communities at John Jay College, is featured in this learning lab. The National Network for Safe Communities is a national organization dedicated to assisting cities in implementing strategic interventions to reduce violence, minimize arrest and incarceration, improve police legitimacy and strengthen relationships between law enforcement and communities.

Kennedy will give an overview of Group Violence Intervention (GVI), a nationwide evidence-based strategy, and how it has been implemented in Minneapolis. GVI reduces homicide, gun violence and community harm by substituting deterrents for enforcement, while promoting closer relationships between law enforcement and the people they serve.

Partners and national experts in violence prevention and other areas connected to enhancing community safety will be featured in the series, which will cover important research, evidence-informed practices, practice-based evidence, promising practices and innovative community safety solutions and models from throughout the country.

The series will also provide insights and inspirations into what is achievable when it comes to reinventing community safety, as well as a better understanding of some of the existing community safety models and practices that we can build on locally.

Everyone is open to inviting family and friends or anyone in their community to join the event. As it will be held via Zoom meeting, registration is needed to receive the meeting link before it is held.
