If you’re looking for a super easy walking area with many beauty and some historical intrigue, Grandad’s Pond may be the place for you.

Located behind Quail Creek State Park, Grandad’s Pond is a city park in Hurricane Utah and had two trails; an outer one of 1 mile and an inner one around the pond of .7 miles

The inner trail is paved and comes with the bonus of wildlife by way of geese, which will keep you entertained as you walk or jog.

When I went, several families let their children play at the pond’s edge, a few teenagers with skateboards on the flat, even surface, and a couple walking their dogs.

There is plenty of room in the parking lot for a few dozen cars and it backs up to the neighborhood.

The park also features an excellent disk/Frisbee golf course with some tricky holes near the water. There’s also a restroom, playground and a pavilion for a variety of activities. The city allows fishing at the park as well.

The most exciting part about Grandad’s Pond is that it sits in front of historic petroglyphs. On the cliff face on the far side, there is what looks to be black lava rock from a distance across the river. At first, you might make this assumption because there is black lava rock on the other side.

The outer trail crosses the shallow river and is easy to walk through. There you’ll found a connecting path that leads to a very cool view of quail hollow.

Along the backside of the mesa, you will find a blackened limestone rockface where ancient people carved the petroglyphs. A petroglyph is an image created by removing part of a rock surface by incising, picking, carving. They’re also considered a form of rock art, but historians believe they’re more than art – they believe they’re also communication tools. Unfortunately, nobody knows exactly what each symbol means, though they’re often repeated across sites throughout the country.

There are several easy-to-find petroglyphs near the bottom of the rocks, but the best ones can be found by climbing up the hill.

Be careful. It’s steep and slippery on the black surface. If you decide to climb the hill, take extra caution not to step on any of the black surfaces as that’s where the petroglyphs are carved. The rock is very fragile and must be protected.

    Find Grandad’s Pond at 350 N 3700 W, Hurricane, UT 84737.
