(CHADBOURN, N.C.) A former North Carolina police chief has been indicted for allegedly embezzling thousands of dollars meant for the family of a cancer patient, according to Newsweek.

Former Chadbourn Police Department Police Chief Anthony Spivey is accused of stealing $8,000 reserved for the family of Phillip Tanner Buffkin, a 14-year-old who died in August 2019 of leukemia.

The News Reporter reports Spivey is also accused of stealing and selling five guns from the department that he led from 2018 to 2021.

Spivey resigned after he was placed on administrative leave in March. He has been since charged with one count of embezzlement, one count of larceny by an employee, one count of felony larceny, one count of felony conversion as well as four counts each of obstructing justice and forgery of wills or deeds.

David previously dismissed 26 criminal cases as a result of Spivey’s alleged evidence tampering in the Chadbourn police evidence locker, citing instances where Spivey could not produce needed proof and that those were the "tip of the iceberg."

The 35-year-old has since been indicted on nearly 90 felony counts since he was first arrested on April 19.
