$15k Marvel prosthetic leg stolen from car crash victim in FL found, returned to family

    2021-06-11

The man is currently in critical condition at a Saint Petersburg hospital.

A man in St. Petersburg, Florida was critically injured around 10:00 PM local time Monday night when he was hit by a car. As a further indignity, police say, someone stole the man’s customized, Marvel Comics-themed prosthetic leg, worth a whopping 15 grand. The prosthesis is not just a part of the man, but quite a striking piece of art too.

49-year-old Christopher Allen Harris was crossing the street using the crosswalk when he was hit by an Infinity G-35 with a 21-year-old man at the wheel. While the investigation into the crash is ongoing, authorities do not believe the 21-year-old man was inebriated behind the wheel.

Harris suffered vital, life-threatening injuries and was taken to Baytown Medical where he remains in critical condition as of this writing.

The impact of the crash quite literally knocked the leg off of Harris. The leg landed on another car that was headed in the opposite direction (eastbound). From here, someone stole it before officers arrived on the scene.

A heavy social media campaign on the part of the police, the Harris family, and sympathetic locals, ultimately secured the return of Harris’ leg. An officer with the St. Petersburg Police Department said the pilfered prosthesis was ultimately found behind a laundromat with “other discarded items.”

Officers aren’t sure how it got there. The investigation is still ongoing and hopefully will be successful in finding whoever stole a piece of a dying man.
