HOUSTON — Houston Police Department is currently investigating a fatal crash on June 2, 2021, at about 9:20 a.m., at 8000 Eastex Freeway, Texas, that killed a 3-year-old girl and an infant.

A four-month-old baby girl, whose identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, was pronounced deceased at a hospital on Friday, June 4. Another passenger, a 3-year-old girl, was pronounced dead at the hospital on the same day of the crash.

According to HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant K. Harris and Officer L. Ho's report, a woman, 23, was heading north with a white Chevrolet Traverse when she stopped to avoid metal debris blocking a moving lane of traffic on the freeway near 8000 Eastex. The debris was part of a lost load from a previous crash about 10 minutes prior.

As the Chevrolet driver attempted to avoid and drive around the debris, a green Ford Taurus hit her car. The crash caused both vehicles to spin.

A juvenile passenger, 3, in the Chevrolet was transported to Texas Children's Hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased. A four-month-old female passenger, also in the Chevrolet, was transported in critical condition to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, where doctors pronounced her deceased two days after the incident.

The male driver, 78, of the Ford was transported to a local hospital with a broken leg, cuts, and bruises. The police reported that both drivers were not under the influence of alcohol or any other substance. At the time of writing, HPD has not identified the tractor-trailer truck or the driver that lost that metal debris.

No charges have been filed at this time. HPD will further investigate the case. For more information, contact the HPD Community Affairs Division at 713-308-3200.
