On Saturday June 5, at around 1:21 pm, the body of a dead man was located at the intersection of McDonnell Road and North Link Road, at the San Francisco International Airport near the airport's parking garage, close to the SFO BART Station.

The San Francisco Police Department and the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Department were immediately on the scene to assess the situation and airport officials confirmed that the death was not related to SFO so there were no impact to its operations during the weekend.

On Monday, the San Mateo County Sheriff's department which is investigating the case identified the man as Juan Corella Rodriguez, a 35-year-old male resident of San Leandro, CA.

Initially few details were available but authorities have confirmed that “the manner of the individuals’ death is still under investigation at this time; however, preliminary investigation suggests that the individual may have committed suicide”.

According to San Francisco Suicide Prevention , “suicide is the tenth leading cause of death for all ages in the United States, and the second leading cause of death for youth. There are approximately 44,000 suicide deaths in the United States and approximately 100 in the City of San Francisco every year.”

Data suggests that men are also significantly more likely to commit suicide than women and nationally, middle-aged adults have the highest suicide rate by age even though the rate has increased for majority of age groups.

San Francisco Suicide Prevention recommend that when someone tells you they’re suicidal, it is a good idea to listen and show empathy; phrases such as “that sounds so painful, but I’m so glad you’re telling me this” could work well. Try and hang out with them to reduce their feeling of isolation as suicidal people often feel very alone and if possible have a conversation about what they’ve been going through to help connect them to safety. There are many mental agencies in your community that can help, and you can fin referrals for emergency services in San Francisco in this link.

If on the other hand, someone is having suicidal thoughts, they suggest you listen to the person in crisis and always validate their feelings, you also ask open-ended questions to help you understand where they are coming from, and paraphrase to clarify what they’re saying as this shows them that you’re listening intently, and it will allow them to evaluate if what they’re saying is what they want to be saying.
