In moments of quiet solitude, I often ponder in my head which type of sandwich is best.

The Cuban sandwich is always a contender.

And in my opinion, there is no place on earth that makes them better than Miami.

Just a little refresher, the Cuban sandwich consists of: ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, dill pickles, mustard, all on buttered Cuban bread that is grilled on a sandwich press.

The exact origins of this delicious masterpiece of a sandwich are not exactly known. It is possible that variations of the Cubano date back as early as the 1800s or even before. Frequent travel between Cuba and Florida was the reason the sandwich became popular in the region.

It is believed that it was a favorite lunch for workers in Cigar Factories both in Havana and in Key West. Oddly enough the sandwich as we know it did not really originate in Miami, but actually became popular in Tampa.

The combination of Cuban, Spanish, and Italian immigration in the Tampa area is believed to have been the catalyst for the creation of the modern Cuban sandwich in the early 1900s. Regional variations have grown out of this, as Tampa’s Cuban does usually have salami added to the mix of meats (I’ll stick with the salami-less Miami version).

This difference has led to a great sandwich rivalry between Tampa and Miami, each claiming to have the superior sandwich.

So, without further delay, our four favorite Cuban sandwich spots in Miami…

Versailles RestaurantAdam and Madalyn

Versailles Restaurant

Versailles is billed as “The World’s Most Famous Cuban Restaurant.” It will forever live on in movie lore as Jon Favreau and Sophia Vegara ate Cuban sandwiches here in the movie Chef (one of my favorites). Located in the Little Havana neighborhood of Miami, Versailles has been open since 1971. I consider Versailles to be the fundamental when it comes to Cuban sandwiches.

While we love to eat in the mirrored dining room, we also enjoy the convenience of calling ahead and picking up our order to go. Our typical order at Versailles starts with the “Special Cuban Sandwich,” which is just a larger version of their Cuban sandwich. The other item we typically order is the Roast Pork Sandwich, which is topped with onions and Cuban mojo. We are also not escaping a trip to Versailles without a couple of empanadas.

The Cubano Especial is priced at $8.50.

Versailles is located at 3555 SW 8th St, Miami, FL 33135.

Sanguich De Miami

If Versailles is the fundamental of Cuban sandwiches, then Sanguich De Miami is the modern master. I absolutely love everything about this sandwich shop, which opened in 2015.

Perhaps the hardest part of dining at Sanguich De Miami is determining which sandwich to actually order. Shockingly enough, I would advise you not to order the Cubano here. Instead go with the Croqueta Preparada, which is essentially a Cubano with two croquettes added to the sandwich.

I don’t think what I am about to say is an overstatement. This is one of the top 10 sandwiches in the entire country.

We also really enjoy the Sanguich de Miami (the namesake), which is essentially a turkey club on Cuban bread.

Pro tip: ask for some of their sauces on the side to dip your sandwich into.

Both the Croqueta Preparada and Sanguich De Miami are priced at $11.99.

Sanguich De Miami is located at 2057 SW 8th St, Miami FL 33135.

Puerto Sagua Restaurant

Puerto Sagua Restaurant serves up all sorts of Cuban fare in a classic diner setting. If you’ve worked up an appetite from a hard day of laying on the beach, this Collins Avenue spot might be just what you crave.

Puerto Sagua Restaurant has perhaps the best classic Cuban sandwich in Miami Beach. There were two things that really stood out to us about their offering. One, their bread as was fantastic, and you know the bread makes the sandwich. Two, their ham was outstanding!

The large Cuban Sandwich will set you back $10.95.

Puerto Sagua Restaurant is located at 700 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33139.

Tinta y Café

Perhaps the best spot on this list to start your day, Tinta y Café is open mainly for breakfast and lunch. Madalyn loves their Cuban coffee, which really gets her day started.

They serve a traditional Cuban sandwich with mortadella added called Patria. Another favorite is the Callejero. The Callejero comes with chicken, prosciutto, cantimpalo, manchego cheese, carmelized onions and cilantro mayo.

The large Patria costs $11.95 while a large Callejero is well worth the $13.95.

Tinta y Café is located at 1315 Ponce de Leon, Coral Gables, FL 33134.
