(THE BRONX, N.Y.) A 16-year-old girl suffered an injury after she mistakenly shot herself while mishandling a handgun in the Bronx on Friday, according to the New York Post.

The incident took place just before 5 p.m. at an apartment building on Sheridan Avenue near East 172nd Street in the Mount Eden section of the borough, police sources said.

The teen was transported to St. Barnabas Hospital with a non-fatal gunshot wound to the eye, police said.

According to the Post, the gun belonged to the girl's boyfriend, who was at the scene. He admitted to police that the weapon was his, which led to his arrest for criminal possession of a firearm, sources told the Post.

Officials confiscated one loaded .380 caliber firearm and one .380 caliber shell at the scene.
