So I am one of those people who just loves living in the city. I’ve lived in Paris, London, and now I’m based in NYC, and I completely get the appeal of city life. Everything you could ever possibly need is within walking distance, you don’t have to drive because public transportation is so widely available, there are just so many great things about city living! Although I know not everyone is as crazy about living in the city as I am, and I know that living in the city can definitely be tiring.

If you are one of those people who either loves living in the city and just needs a break or you live in the city, but are longing for more life outside of the city, then don’t you worry! I’ve got a whole list of ideas for easy weekend getaways from New York City. The first few places on this list are within 2 hours of the city, and the last few are a little further away, but totally worth it!

Getaway Spots That Are Around 3 Hours Away

    Beacon, NY

First up is one of my favorite getaway spots from the city, Beacon, NY. It’s located about an hour and a half outside of the city, so super close and easy to get to! There is so much to do in Beacon, it’s the perfect place to spend the weekend. There’s art galleries, parks, hiking, and more! It’s the great city escape!

    Montauk, NY

And next up we have Montauk, which is just about 2 hours away from the city. Located in Long Island, Montauk is a great getaway for so many reasons! It’s right on the shore, so it’s a perfect summertime vacation spot, with incredible shoreline views and of course the Montauk Lighthouse, it will definitely be a relaxing city getaway!

    Lake George, NY

    tripadvisor.com

Another great city getaway spot is Lake George, which is only about 3 and a half hours away from the city. This is a great spot for anyone who loves the outdoors, but obviously can’t get their fix in the city. Lake George has whitewater rafting, caves, natural bridges, and tons of history. And if that’s not good enough, then the factory outlets will definitely motivate you to get there for some great deals!

    Greenwich, CT

And of course if you don’t feel like driving too far, Greenwich, CT is a great option! Greenwich is only about a 40 minute drive from the city, so it’s super close! Greenwich is full of history and interesting museums, and it also has tons of cool shops and restaurants.

    Newport, RI

And the last getaway in the around 3 hours away category is Newport, RI, which is just about a 3 hour drive. Like Montauk, Newport is right on the beach, so there’s lots to do! Between shops, restaurants, museums, wineries, breweries, and just the beautiful sights of the town - its definitely worth a visit!.

Getaway Spots That Are 4 Hours or More

    Cape Cod, MA

And now we move on to some destinations that are just a little further out there - but once again SO worth the trip! First up is Cape Cod, MA. Cape Cod is about a 4 hour drive from the city. Cape Cod is right on the shore line of MA, and the beaches are just beautiful, and so relaxing - again a great change of pace from the city!

    St Michaels, MD

Next up is St. Michaels, MD, which is about a 4 hour drive from the city. St. Michaels holds a special place in my heart because I was born and raised in MD - so I know just how great it is there, and especially small, quaint towns like St. Michaels. St. Michaels is right on the water, so the views are great, and there’s tons of shopping, restaurants, winteries, and breweries!

    Finger Lakes, NY

And last but certainly not least, is the Finger Lakes, NY. The Finger Lakes are about 5 hours outside of the city, so a little bit further than the rest of the getaway destinations on this list - but trust me it's so worth it! There’s lots of great outdoor activities, hiking, skiing, there’s museums, and parks!
