In a downright-harrowing scene on May 26, a man who led Indian River County, Florida deputies on a 40 minute plus chase got out of his vehicle and threw his two-month-old infant son in the vehicle with him at the deputies pursuing him.

After a traffic stop was attempted on the vehicle, it is alleged John Henry James III took deputies on a 40 minute plus chase where he drove recklessly, endangering the lives of pedestrians, other drivers, the deputies pursuing him, not to mention himself and his 2-month-old son in the vehicle with him.

After 40 minutes of reckless disregard for anybody’s safety, James drove into an apartment complex where deputies were able to box him in. It was at this point that he hurled the infant with him at the deputies pursuing him. It was a miracle that one of the deputies caught him in midair.

James proceeded to flee on foot from there but was tackled by deputies. He then allegedly writhed on the ground and bit at the law enforcement officers trying to restrain him.

James reportedly told deputies he couldn’t breathe because he had asthma, so he was dispatched to an ambulance where he was put on a stretcher and taken to a local hospital to be checked out in greater detail. According to EMTs, James continued to resist even as they put him on a stretcher to get to the hospital and be checked out.

James was treated for a pre-existing condition then released into the custody of deputies. He is currently being held at the Indian River County Jail without bond. He is facing several charges – many of them felonies – including aggravated battery on an officer, battery, reckless driving, resisting arrest with violence, and aggravated child abuse.
