Race for animal cause to be held in Chattahoochee River banks

ATLANTA — The Possum Trot 10k will be holding a race along the banks of the Chattahoochee River in celebration of its 43rd anniversary. It is open for runners to participate in this race while saving the animals and funding environmental education at the Chattahoochee Nature Center (CNC).

Northside Hospital is the principal supporter of this event. “Their support allows us to implement our health and wellness opportunities and connect people to nature, “said DeAnn Fordham, Senior Director for Development at Marketing at CNC.

The runners can select one of the two kinds of races offered by the organizer this year: an in-person race and a virtual race. The in-person race begins at 7 a.m. on June 19.

Every participant will get free professional photos and a celebratory t-shirt. Medals will be given to the winners in each age group. CNC will also give runners free admission to access its 127 acres of land all day.

“We are so excited to be able to offer runners an in-person and virtual race option in 2021. After having to move to an all-virtual race in 2020 we look forward to the 2021 participants starting in waves and enjoying the flat, fast race along the Chattahoochee River,” said Tamara Kinmon, CNC Event Program Director.

All the proceeds from the race benefit will be donated to the Chattahoochee Nature Center to support the environmental education programs – focusing on the Chattahoochee River and its watershed – and its wildlife rehabilitation efforts.

This year, CNC has taken care of over 400 injured animals. The wounded animals are treated with care by the on-site staff, who work hard to return them to their habitats, if possible.

Besides helping the wildlife, CNC hosts over 40,000 students from more than 400 schools in the metro Atlanta area. The organization teaches them all about the importance and science of nature. This past school year, the organization offered virtual field trip options to keep students connected to nature.
