    Man Speeds Through Roadblock, Fires Shots at Deputies, Given $1 Million Bond

    Deputies conducting a routine safety checkpoint were shot at in what turned into a police chase.

    On August 28, 2024, Tishomingo County deputies were conducting a safety checkpoint at County Roads 957 and 995 when a car approached. Rather than stopping, the car sped through it. According to a press release from Tishomingo County Sheriff's Office, the deputies made an attempt to stop the vehicle, but it did not stop.

    Deputies then pursued the vehicle, at which point the driver fired shots. The police chase led deputies to Colbert County, Alabama, where the local sheriff's office joined the chase. The driver continued to flee while firing shots at the officers and deputies.

    The pursuit came to an end on a dead-end road in Colbert County, Alabama. According to the press release, an officer-involved shooting occured at the dead-end road.

    The driver, identified as John William Griffin, received medical attention at the scene from the deputies before being transported to Huntsville Hospital for treatment.

    Griffin was released from the hospital and taken into police custody on September 9, 2024. He was taken into the custody of the Madison County, Alabama Sheriff's Office.

    On September 10, 2024, Griffin was taken and booked into the Tishomingo County Jail. Griffin was charged with felony fleeing, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and five counts of aggravated assault on law enforcement.

    Tishomingo County Justice Court Judge Seth Adams set Griffin's bond at $1,000,788.00.
