AKRON - LEGO is an excellent toy for children, and more so for individuals with special needs. Not only does it allow creativity to grow, but it also offers stress-reducing repetitive movements that promote the development of children’s motor skills.

The company offers a medium for individuals with disabilities to share and play together with others like them. Moreover, playing with the toy also helps jumpstart an individual’s process of social skill-building. Therefore, the Autism Society of Greater Akron (ASGA) has opened the LEGO Club program to facilitate fun learning for children with special needs.

This LEGO Club welcomes children with good verbal skills and building capabilities with developmental disabilities and are aged 7-12. In the club, children will learn to engage with other participants in the spirit of playing together. They will also learn to take turns, accept guidance and practice their speaking skills as they present their projects.

Participants need to be ready with a basic supply of LEGO blocks at home to participate. A parent must be present with the participating child during the entire one-hour meeting. Participants are also required to be ready with an electronic device equipped with a camera and a microphone.

ASGA’s online LEGO Club takes place every Saturday, starting on June 12, 2021, from 10 to 11 a.m. for six weeks. The invitations for the Zoom meetings will be sent via email to participants two days before each meeting. ASGA will not allow outside friends or other family members to participate if they are not within the age range of 7-12 and have not registered for the online program.

The cost for the 6-week club sessions is $30.00 with limited scholarships. For more information and to register, please visit autismakron.org.
