Oregon is a beautiful state packed with national forests, wildlife refuges, state parks, and an unlimited number of opportunities for outdoor adventures. Those into hiking will find no shortage of trails to explore as you make your way from place to place around the state.

Whether you've been to Oregon before or just planning your first visit, these five stops are a great way to start an Oregon summer road trip.

    1. Portland

Portland has to be one of the most fun cities in America. It's got a quirky yet artsy vibe and so many fun things to see and do.

I recommend spending at least two full days in Portland so you have enough time to explore. You'll definitely want to start your day with coffee and donuts at either Voodoo Donut or Blue Star.

Afterwards enjoy a walk around town with a mandatory stop at Powell's Books. If you love to read you're going to fall in love with Powell's Books. It's easy to spend hours in there and not get bored, so keep an eye on the time as you wander the aisles.

Once you get hungry head to the ctiy's food carts in downtown. This is where you'll get excellent food at a very reasonable price. They have vendors selling just about everything here, so no matter what you're hungry for, this is the place to get it.

In the evenings, head out on a self-guided brewery tour to sample the city's best craft beers. The breweries also make a great place for getting dinner as well, as most have delicious food to pair with their beers.

    2. Columbia River Gorge

The Columbia River Gorge is located about 90 minutes east of Portland. This area of Oregon is absolutely beautiful and makes a really fun day trip from Portland if you'd like to spend some time outside the city.

Along the Columbia River Gorge area you'll get to see several waterfalls including the famous Multnomah Falls pictured above.

Plan to spend a half day exploring the area, more if you plan to do any hiking.

    3. Oregon coast

A road trip down the Oregon coast is always a great idea. You'll come across sandy beaches, rocky cliffs, and incredible views all along the way.

If you have lots of time, start your road trip in Astoria and head south along the coast. Be sure not to miss stops in Seaside, Cannon Beach, Arch Cape, and Rockaway Beach.

You'll find all kinds of cute coastal towns along the way with great local restaurants and shops. Seafood will be a popular option since you're along the coast, but you can find just about anything else too.

    4. Crater Lake National Park

Crater Lake National Park is located about 5 hours south of Portland and is absolutely beautiful during the summertime.

Since you have your car with you, you'll definitely want to do Rim Drive, a 33 mile loop around the lake. You'll find stunning views of the lake nearly the entire way.

Other popular activities around Crater Lake include hiking, biking, and nature walks.

If you plan to stay overnight near Crater Lake National Park, be sure to book your accomodations well in advance. This is a popular summer destination and rooms often sell out.

    5. Mount Hood

Mount Hood is a potentially active stratovolcano located about an hour and 45 minutes east of Portland.

Popular activities around Mount Hood include hiking, biking, swimming, nature walks, and photography. Visitors can go swimming at Trilium Lake located just south of Mount Hood.

Those that want to go hiking can set out on the popular Timberline Trail, a 39 mile that circles Mount Hood at the timberline. If you aren't ready for the full 39 miles, shorter day hikes are always an option.

The USA is vast... There are hundreds of beautiful places, that few of us ever get to visit.

Not sure anyone believes their description of Portland, that’s a place I would fear for my safety but the other four places are beautiful
