The Grove Opens Bistro 1759, a New, Fancy Dining Experience on Top of a Trolley

The Los Angeles restaurant scene is re-opening with a bang, and the latest, possibly most lavish, and tastiest new opening might come with a side of motion sickness (but not really).

Anyone who has ever been to The Grove in the Beverly Grove neighborhood of LA is familiar with certain aspects of the uber-popular outdoor mall. There is a dancing water fountain show that blasts music and wows young kids every hour on the hour. There is unbelievable people watching among the shoppers perusing the dozens of stores of this shopping mecca, and there’s a very slow-moving trolley that does a lazy loop around the grounds.

Beginning on May 18, 2021, riders of that trolley now have the option to wine and dine on the move with the launch of Bistro 1759, a top-deck dining space with a stellar tasting menu.

Some clarifications: you can’t just hop on the trolley, climb upstairs, and eat. This is an exclusive experience that needs to be booked in advance. But once you sidle to the top and buckle in, you’re in for a majestic 90-minute tasting excursion.

Catered by Blue Ribbon Sushi (also at The Grove as a dine-in destination if you want to stay at sea-level), the four-course meal can be personalized with some of the restaurant’s classics like Wings & Oxtail Fried Rice, Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice, and a smattering of chef’s choice sashimi. And for those guests with little ones, there are kid-friendly options including the Blue Ribbon Cheeseburger, Ginger Bread Pudding, and Kids Maki. The beauty of this meal is that diners can customize it however they want, including the option of beverage pairings. Wine, beer, sake, and cocktails can be added for the perfect outdoor dining experience.

Fans of The Grove might not realize that the trolley itself is built on the historic undercarriage of a Boston streetcar from the 1950s. The bright green cable car with brass railings and wooden benches has been a staple of the outdoor mall since its opening in 2002 and the car will continue to offer shoppers the same meandering ride as diners clink glasses up above.

If you can’t make it to The Grove for this eating extravaganza, Caruso’s other properties are also hosting new innovative eating options. At The Americana at Brand in Glendale, there is private fountain-side, cobblestone dining available, and at Palisades Village in the Pacific Palisades, there’s The Coast Lounge, which provides private, indoor/outdoor space for up to 10 people.
