(SAN FRANCISCO) Several bystanders intervened during an assault and attempted robbery of a 77-year-old Asian American woman in San Francisco's Japantown on Tuesday, KPIX 5 reported.

A witness who heard screaming and saw the assault from a balcony said a construction worker ran to the woman and pushed the man off her. The assailant left with the woman's bag.

After the assault and robbery, the woman went to a nearby 23-year-old security guard at the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China on Laguna Street near Geary Boulevard and told him what had happened.

The security guard was joined by the witness from the balcony. They found and cornered the assailant at a post office several blocks away from the attack.

Police arrived and later identified him as 28-year-old Luis Jorrin. He was arrested and charged with robbery, elder abuse, parole violation and committing a crime while out on bail.

Jorrin has been arrested at least ten times in the last five years for robbery, attempted robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and various drug charges. He also violated parole in 2019 and 2020.

KPIX 5 reported the police are not investigating the case as a hate crime at this time.
