(NEW YORK)  Democratic New York City mayoral candidate Andrew Yang was endorsed by a former rival on Wednesday as he continues to lead the race to become the city's first Asian-American mayor.

His campaign announced Carlos Menchaca, a Brooklyn city councilman and former mayoral candidate, will appear together on Wednesday before discussing his plan to make it easier for immigrants in the city to send money to their families in their home countries, according to The Hill.

Menchaca had tried to run as one of the left-leaning candidates in the field, before dropping out in March.

This key endorsement comes amid continued polling leads for the former 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, to replace term-limited Mayor Bill de Blasio.

As of last week, Yang saw his lead widening among New York City voters, benefitting from rank-choice voting, a new vote choice system for city elections and name recognition. He has also received a $6 million advertisement boost by a new political action committee that would counter negative advertising against him.

“We share a lot of values that are rooted in bringing community voices to the table to shape policies,” Menchaca said to the New York Times, which first reported on the endorsement.

Yang said he is "excited to have [Menchaca] on board on so many levels” and that “he has been fighting for marginalized communities for years.”
