I Was Sent Home in Labor Pt. 2

    2021-02-05

We arrived home, my mom was watching Ella (who thankfully had just gone down for her nap) I really didn’t want her to see me in so much pain. My contractions were steadily getting worse and worse. However, I had to push through to make it to 7pm. That’s when the new on call doctor would be in at the hospital and I could get a second opinion.

I went right upstairs to try and nap — I was exhausted. Chip laid with me and held my hand through the 3 minute apart contractions (YES 3 MINUTES). I kept trying to just push through the pain but they were getting stronger. In my head I was yelling “7pm 7pm 7pm” also a few choice words for the MD who sent me home.

I wish I could describe the pain but I know other moms know exactly what I’m talking about when I say the pain. Chip ended up calling my mom back to the house (who ran home to get clothes and to let her dog out) because he was taking me back to the hospital. I told him no because we HAD to make it to 7pm. I wanted the new doctor. My mom came back over anyways — it’s was 2:30pm.

I could not function — my contractions were getting worse, I couldn’t breath and then all of a sudden they changed. It was a whole new type of contraction and I could feel my body pushing. I went to the bathroom thinking I had to go and noticed spotting — normal because I had multiple people check my cervix in the past 24 hours. So I didn’t think anymore of it....because I was in too much pain. It was now 2:45pm. “Just hold off until 7pm” I kept telling myself.

I went back into the living room and sat on the couch with Chip and my mom. They were trying so hard to keep me distracted from my contractions that were staying consistent at 3 minutes apart. Breathing in through my nose out through my mouth — Chip on his knees holding my hand and my mom rubbing my back.

I could only imagine their faces. Then I remembered one of the nurses saying “take a hot shower” and it would relax me and help this apparently “false labor” to stop.

That’s when I heard Ella getting up from her nap and my mom said “I’ll get her and take her to my house while you shower. Keep me updated!” It’s 3pm.

Chip helped me in and out of the shower. I had 3 more of the pushing contractions— I really

REALLY thought I had to use the bathroom. But this time when I stood up I heard Chip go “umm honey” and I turned around and all I saw was blood. Then I had another pushing contraction.

I said “call the doctor, we are going in NOW.”

He was already on the phone. We were out the door at 3:20pm.

I was TERRIFIED. We live a good 30 minutes away from the hospital.

Chip flew — I prayed and cursed the doctors name who sent me home….

We made it into the ER parking lot. I got out of the car and started to walk towards the entrance. I knew Chip would be running in behind me. I made it half way and another pushing contraction hit me so hard I was bent over in the middle of the road. I thought I was going to fall but Chip was there at the perfect moment to catch me. I saw the girl taking temperatures face go “Oh my! Wheelchair.”

I made it in the ER door. The time: no clue.

I leaned over the wheel chair and had another pushing contraction but this time it broke my water. Chip pushed by the ER people and ran me to labor and delivery on the 3rd floor. The time: still no clue.

At this point I was yelling in pain. Of course no one was at the front desk but the charge nurse heard me and came running. They were opening all the doors clearing the way so Chip could keep moving. I looked at her and said “He is coming!” she held my hand and said “We can do this!”

Six nurses flooded the room. I was just trying to get undressed and get checked. My main nurse said “yes, you are completely dilated and he is right there!” I was so scared — I told her I wanted an epidural. How was I going to do this without an epidural?! Then the pushing pain came again, I’ll never forget it. She said “If we start pushing now THAT pain will be gone” and I was sold. Then the doctor arrived and PRAISE THE LORD it wasn’t the one who’s name I’d been cursing all afternoon....

She was one of the hospital’s doctors and she was absolutely perfect. I knew God had His hand in this after meeting her.

9 minutes....the nurses told me it was 9 minutes from the door to Wesley being in my arms.

    The storm was finally over.

Wesley came out screaming — the best sound ever.

We were both happy, healthy and exhausted. Finally we could get some sleep.

The following day we met some many sweet nurses. I was apparently the talk of the town in the delivery ward. “The girl that was sent home and delivered 4 hours later and barely made it back!”

They helped us figure out what exactly could have happened with my cervix and why it was stuck at 3cm. We believe that when I had Ella; she got stuck behind my pelvic bone and with the multiple pushes to get her out caused her to create a tough scar tissue which basically Wesley had to push past in order for my cervix to open more but once this happened it would be no time before he arrived. We figured the amount of blood we saw after my shower was actually him breaking that barrier. Which then led me to go from 3cm to 10cm in a 30 minute period.

This is such a scary thought because we could have easily had an accidental home or car birth if we didn’t leave exactly when we did.

So what about the crazy doctor who sent me away? I’m not sure, a few nurses told me he felt felt bad — probably to be nice. But in all honesty he shouldn’t be a doctor at all.

I had my first child and called the doctor when the pain got worse. I had been in labor about 10 hours and he told me to stay home as it would be hours. Another hour passed and the pain was like an elephant stomping on my back. I called again and said that I needed to be checked. I could tell he was annoyed but I knew it was close. I got there and he checked me, his eyes got wide and he started getting on the monitors. Since I was at a private birthing center, there were no staff on duty as there was no other patient. My contractions were never closer than 5 minutes and my entire labor was 12 hours. I had been at work when it started on my due date and told that since it was my first, it was probably false labor. People need to listen to their bodies and trust their instinct.
