(SKAGIT, Wash.) Authorities temporarily closed at least half of the traffic over the Interstate 5 Skagit bridge, to allow for an inspection after a semitruck collided with the bridge structure early Wednesday.

A spokesperson for the Washington State Patrol said northbound traffic had been stopped from crossing the bridge after a semitruck struck a barrier, breaking its front axle and fully blocking the roadway. The spokesperson did not give a timeline for reopening the crossing, which was the site of a 2013 bridge collapse.

Interstate 5 is the region's busiest roadway and a major economic corridor. In 2013, a semitruck struck the overhead structure of the then-Skagit bridge, causing it to collapse into the river below, and ultimately leading to its replacement.
