(DALLAS) On Saturday, the Dallas Bach Society presented a concert of instrumental concertos with Christmas associations instead of the traditional German baroque Advent and Christmas cantatas, reports The Dallas Morning News.

This change was made to mitigate the risks of infecting people with the coronavirus through vocal singing. The string players wore masks and spaced out, and audience members were also spaced out from each other at Zion Lutheran Church.

The 11 string players performed G minor Concerto Grosso by Arcangelo Corelli, E major Violin Concerto by Antonio Vivaldi and Concerto “for the holy Nativity” by Pietro Antonio Locatelli. The group also played six instrumental arrangements of noëls, or Christmas carols, by French composer Marc-Antoine Charpentier instead of the usual sing-along carols.

The Bach Society is planning to present Handel’s Messiah with only 12 singers at 7 p.m. Dec. 22 at Zion Lutheran Church and an al fresco Messiah sing-along at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 19 at Annette Strauss Square.
