First Mountain Snow of the Season Possible Next Friday and Saturday Near Knoxville, Roanoke, and Morgantown as Northwest Flow Brings First Freeze Chances

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Forecast models are hinting at the first mountain snow of the season for the southern and central Appalachians next Friday and Saturday, November 13 and 14. This is early pattern spotting, and nothing is set in stone yet. The timing lines up with when the region usually sees its first northwest flow snow event. The same cold air could also bring the first freeze to areas outside the mountains.

The winter of 2025-2026 featured near normal snowfall in the Roanoke Valley, New River Valley and Lynchburg, above normal snowfall in the southside and below normal snowfall for portions of the Allegheny Highlands. Most notably was the snow and sleet storm in late January that caused significant impacts on travel and power, as cold weather remained locked in place well after the winter storm ended. Despite alternating periods of cold and mild spells the winter as a whole was near average in terms of temperature.

Upper James Region Drought Downgraded to a Watch, but Ground Water Remains at Emergency

It’s been a dry spring and summer and many people are glad to see additional precipitation over the last month or so, help to alleviate drought conditions. Counties in the Upper James evaluation region, that include Highland, Bath, Allegheny, Rockbridge, Craig, and Bottetourt counties were recently downgraded from a drought warning status to a watch citing trends in precipitation along with increases in lake levels and river flows. But as we continue deeper into the fall months and the drought subsides, we aren’t entirely out of the woods yet. Ground water levels are still listed at emergency levels.
