Continue to say yes
Wednesday evening my sons and I celebrated when “The Register” reported the news that the school I once called my "home" and the school they now do would finally be renovated. My middle school son celebrated the fact they would have a space that made them feel like middle schoolers and my youngest celebrated the fact there would be a true cafeteria to eat in. My oldest celebrated feeling like his voice mattered as he participated in the support even though he likely won’t benefit from it while he is in school. They all celebrated that they would not have to think about lead in the pipes and asbestos in tiles. Most importantly, we celebrated the fact that our voices were heard. The town saw us as important and saw that the safety and education of our most vulnerable, our youth, was important.

On Oct. 24, 1921, America’s first unknown soldier was buried at Arlington National Cemetery. The honor was adopted after the U.S.’s involvement in World War I. In 1937, the Third U.S. Infantry regiment began the tradition of guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Sentinels have been on duty every minute of every day since 1937. They perform a precise routine of 21 steps across a 63-foot walkway. Sunny skies make for spectacular Group 2 season opener at Wiscasset Speedway
Saturday, April 27 was the perfect day for racing with temperatures hovering just above 60 degrees, a light breeze and not a cloud in the sky. It was the opposite of the weather the week prior, where rain had plagued Wiscasset Speedway during their 2024 season opener. This allowed for a full Group 2 race program to be run, starting off with the T&L Automotive Modifieds.

Editorial page ad
This is in response to the paid advertisement which appears on your editorial page in the April 25 issue. As a former professionally trained journalist and a newspaper editor, I was taught that editorial pages are the opinion of the papers’ owner/editorial board. Opinion pieces, op-eds—carry a byline. Letters to the editor must be signed. In other words, the writers take responsibility for what is printed. Readers may not agree with the opinions but they can rebut them and they know the source because everything is signed or carries a byline.

Southport Column: Island clean-up, ospreys and more
Southporters are amazing people in many ways, one of which is they can endure tough weather. For example, in spite of temperatures in the low 40s and icy rain, cars continued to drive into the school parking lot after 11:30 a.m. last Sunday morning to participate in Southport Cleanup. Gerry Gamage was cooking hot dogs under a square canopy, where baked goods were for sale, and water bottles and salty snacks to accompany the dogs were for free.
