Some shelters across the state are not just offering free adoptions Saturday but free microchips, ID tags and licenses. Placer SPCA in Roseville is waiving pet adoption fees all day on June 1. Shelter officials say they are at capacity with many more animals coming in; the hope is that events like this will encourage people to adopt a new four-legged friend.

NORTH HIGHLANDS, Calif. — A family-run restaurant in North Highlands is assessing the damage after a fire early Friday morning. Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District crews were dispatched to Pancake Palace on Watt Avenue around 1:32 a.m. Fire crews encountered heavy smoke pouring from the building when they arrived, a Sac Metro Fire spokesperson said. The fire was extinguished and no injuries were reported, according to firefighters.

Gold Country Writers go short - really short - in story contest
Gold Country Writers honored the winners of the 59-Word Story Contest on Wednesday. Taking the idea from "59-word," the event's theme was "1959 Sock Hop." Members dressed in 50s clothing with distinctive socks and baseball caps. Steve Enos was awarded the "Top Sock" prize of a pair of socks. Catharine Bramkamp was the emcee, introducing all 15 entries in the contest. Stories were read, and the three winners anonymously judged were awarded framed certificates.
