The driver of an SUV ran a red light on Capitol Trail, striking another vehicle and killing a 61-year-old Newark man Wednesday morning, police said.

The crash happened shortly before 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Capitol Trail and Brewster Drive, according to Delaware State Police.

The victim was driving a Cadillac DTS and was attempting to turn from Brewster Drive onto Capitol Trail. The driver of a Toyota 4Runner was heading east on Capitol Trail, failed to stop at the traffic light and crashed into the left side of the Cadillac, police said.

The driver of the Cadillac was rushed to nearby Christiana Hospital, where he died a short time later. The driver of the Toyota, a 22-year-old Newark man, was not hurt.

Police continue to investigate the crash. Troopers are asking anyone who witnessed this crash to contact Cpl. P. McAndrew at 302-365-8486.
