The New York Knicks finished with the second seed in the Eastern Conference but came short of reaching the conference finals. After their NBA postseason exit, they must consider which moves to make to improve the team.

NBA insider Shams Charania discussed on FanDuel TV’s Run It Back that Julius Randle has the option to opt out of his contract in 2025. If the Knicks are hesitant to extend his deal, they might consider trading the three-time All-Star in a major deal.

“Julius Randle, he’s got a player option in 2025…Teams are monitoring this situation for sure, because how [the Knicks] handle that extension situation, if that is a conversation, what transpires, I think that will be interesting,” Charania said.

Randle will earn $30.3 million for the 2024-25 season, making his contract useful for matching salaries in trades. Any star the Knicks target will likely make over $30 million or even $40 million next season.

New York faces future financial decisions, as OG Anunoby can opt out this summer, Jalen Brunson has a player option for 2024-25, Mitchell Robinson becomes a free agent in 2025, and both Josh Hart and Donte DiVincenzo will be free agents in 2026.

The roster’s expenses will increase significantly, and the new, more restrictive collective bargaining agreement necessitates prudent spending.
