NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — Officers on patrol in East Flatbush, Brooklyn early Sunday morning fatally shot an armed man after a brief foot chase, NYPD brass said at a press conference hours after the incident.

At 1:18 a.m., two uniformed officers and a sergeant from the 67th Precinct were patrolling in a marked squad car. The trio was driving westbound on Church Avenue, and while approaching the intersection of 52nd Street, observed a man pointing a gun at another man.

The officers exited their car and approached the men, at which point the armed man began running eastbound on Church Avenue.

“The sergeant yelled ‘gun,’ the officers gave commands for the male to drop the gun,” NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey said.

He continued running until he reached 52-11 Church Avenue, at which point he moved from the sidewalk to the street. One of the officers discharged their taser, momentarily stunning the suspect.

The man got back to his feet with the gun still in his hand and ran back to the sidewalk and back toward 52nd Street, officials said.

“The officers give further commands for the male to drop the gun and they fire their weapons. They fire their weapons, the male stops, he falls to the ground,” Maddrey said.

Once on the ground, police were able to subdue him, and they began performing life-saving measures.

Police said that the man was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County, and soon after his arrival, he succumbed to his injuries.

A gun, which police said was in the man’s possession, was recovered from the scene.

The officers involved were removed to an area hospital and medically evaluated.

“About an hour and a half after this incident occurred, another male walked into a local hospital with a graze wound,” Maddrey said. “And he said he was in the vicinity of this area, so this will be part of the investigation to see if this male was actually hit at this location.”

The shooting is under investigation by NYPD detectives and the department’s Force Investigation Division.
