New York City Council is looking to pass a new bill that will introduce dog poop bag dispensers on garbage cans. Councilmember Julie Menin notes that this will eliminate any excuses for dog owners not to clean up after their canines. It should help tackle the issue of pedestrians finding dog waste on the sidewalks of New York City.
Council considers introducing dog poop bag dispensers to New York City streets
Owners should always bring dog poop bags when they are out and about walking their pup. However, sometimes, there may be circumstances when they forget to bring their own bag.
Once this bill is passed, it will serve as a great option for dog owners who have forgotten to bring along a dog poop bag. Councilmembers also hope it will push more people to throw away their canine’s waste responsibly. Per Gothamist , Councilmember Julie Menin stated, “It’s going to be pretty embarrassing…dog goes to the bathroom on the street, and you don’t pick up when a couple feet away there is a dog waste bag.”
The bill will not only introduce dog poop bag dispensers to New York City streets. It will be accompanied by campaigns to raise awareness about the negative consequences of pet waste littering on sidewalks. The campaigns will cover health implications and how the problem negatively affects the residents of New York City.
Department of Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch is on board with the new bill. However, she suggested attaching the dog poop bag dispensers to poles, signs, benches, or any other fixed structure. She explained that garbage cans are often moved around. People move them frequently to empty them or clear out the streets for a fair. So, attaching them to permanent fixtures would be a better choice overall.
Most dog owners also liked the idea as it will benefit responsible pet parents who sometimes forget to bring a bag.
