What better way to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Friends finale than by calling it out on its inaccurate representation of New York City? If anyone is qualified to do so, it’s comedian and lifelong New Yorker Sebastian Conelli , and in the latest episode of the New York Post’s “That Ain’t NY!” video series he gets real about what the hit NBC sitcom got right and mostly wrong about the city that never sleeps.

7 ‘Friends’ Episodes That Highlight Why Matthew Perry’s Chandler Bing Was So Beloved

Sorry to supposed New York dwelling pals Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), Monica (Courteney Cox), Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow), Joey (Matt LeBlanc), Chandler (Matthew Perry), and Ross (David Schwimmer), because most of what the show depicts seems to be pretty off-base in terms of NYC culture and locations.

Conelli dishes on how Friends got it wrong with coffee shops, hospitals, snow, bagels, unlocked doors, money, real estate, geography, pigeons, trash, public transit, and Hootie & the Blowfish concerts, just to name a few things. And the pizza, God, the pizza. “This is bullsh*t right here,” Conelli perfectly summed up the doughy monstrosity that the show presents as a New York pie in Season 1, Episode 9. “Absolutely disgusting.”

Although Conelli didn’t hold back when it came to calling Friends out on where it missed the mark, he also made sure to acknowledge a few things the show nailed.

One such thing was the rest of the gang completely zoning out during Phoebe’s performance during an open mic night at Central Perk. “I love how much everyone hates her music, because that is so New York,” Conelli commented. “Everyone’s gonna hate the art that you do and you know what? You keep on f*cking doing it!”

He later pointed out how the show was spot on with the reveal of how Monica can only afford her giant apartment because she’s illegally subletting from her grandmother. “Lying to your landlord is a classic New York move. I love it.”

So take heart, Friends fans. While most of what the show depicts definitely ain’t New York, there’s still a few bits of reality to make even a real a New Yorker a little proud.
