NEW YORK (PIX11) – The Adams administration “will address” NYPD officers illegally parking cruisers after the U.S. Department of Justice threatened to sue the police department over the issue, a city official said Tuesday.

In March, the Department of Justice issued a warning to the NYPD to stop illegally parking police cruisers on sidewalks, crosswalks and other areas in New York City where they shouldn’t be parked. The issue is so widespread that it has become a civil rights violation against people with disabilities who use the city’s pedestrian grid, according to federal officials.

If the issue isn’t corrected, the Department of Justice may file a lawsuit against the NYPD due to violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Meera Joshi, the deputy mayor for operations in New York City, said the NYPD’s parking issue is “unacceptable” and will be addressed.

“Any vehicle that blocks the path of a pedestrian, especially those with mobility limitations, that is unacceptable, and it is extremely unacceptable when it is a public servant’s vehicle. So it is a matter that we take seriously, and we will address,” Joshi said.
