Gov. Kathy Hochul teased new taxes to fund her and Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s universal childcare program Friday — as she faces rising pressure from his lefty allies to hike levies in the wake of Democrats’ midterm domination. “When we have a severe need for something extraordinary, I am willing to do what has to happen,” Hochul — fresh off her re-election win — told reporters from the Somos political conference in Puerto Rico. “I think you’ll see a thoughtful approach to this, it is not ideological, it’s pragmatic and what we need to do is deliver for the people to put us in office,” she continued — just moments after Mamdani, who stood grinning at her side — said he still stood firm in his “tax the rich” beliefs. Trader Joe's plans 2 new New York stores. See where they're going

Two new Trader Joe's stores are planned for New York, expanding the popular grocery chain's presence in the state. The California-based retailer announced plans this summer to open new locations in the Syracuse area and Yonkers as part of its latest nationwide expansion. The plans add to the company's growth in New York, which includes a Long Island store that opened earlier this year. The expansion comes as Trader Joe's continues to draw shoppers with its private-label products and competitively priced groceries. Where are the new Trader Joe's stores? According to Trader Joe's, the two planned stores will be located at: Camillus: 3515 W. Genesee St., in the Syracuse area. Yonkers: 2482 Central Park Ave. The Camillus store, located just west of Syracuse in Onondaga County, will be about 9,000 square feet and become the area's second Trader Joe's. The existing Syracuse-area store is at 3422 Erie Blvd. E. in DeWitt. The Yonkers location will cover about 10,000 square feet. When will the new Trader Joe's stores open? Trader Joe's has not announced opening dates for either New York location. Spokeswoman Nakia Rohde said new stores typically open within three to six months of being announced. SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul pledged more support for Puerto Rico on Friday as it remains mired in multiple crises, asserting during a trip to the island that the sweeping Democratic win in the U.S. midterm elections will be a boon for the U.S. territory. “There’s a potential in that we can finally start to deliver for working-class people across this country,” Mamdani said. “What we heard today was the fact that so often what’s described as a natural crisis here in Puerto Rico is in fact a political crisis, one that is the result of political choices.” Hochul said the election results represent “a whole new day” for Puerto Rico and warned that the federal government will be held responsible. “What we’ve seen over the last two years is really an abandonment of that commitment," she said. A hiker from Schenectady had nearly reached the summit of Mount Marcy on October 20 when they fell and refused to get up. Instead, the hiker texted 911 for help. At 5,343 feet, Mount Marcy is New York’s highest peak. Governor Hochul And Attorney General James Notify Local Officials Of Obligation To End Immigration Detention Contracts

Governor Kathy Hochul and New York Attorney General Letitia James today announced that the Office of the Attorney General’s (OAG) Office of Immigrant Trust (OIT) sent a letter to county executives and sheriffs across New York State providing them with guidance about their legal obligation to end any agreement to house or detain people for federal civil immigration violations by November 25, 2026. Under the Local Cops, Local Crimes Act, passed by the New York legislature and signed by Governor Hochul in May, local governments are prohibited from housing civil immigration detainees in local correctional facilities on behalf of federal immigration authorities, and have until November 25 to unwind those agreements.
