After a woman was shot dead and 11 more people were injured by gunfire in the 800 block of South Peters Street in the Warehouse District, New Orleans City Council President Helena Moreno is calling on the state legislature to support efforts to create gun-free zones in New Orleans.

"Last night’s mass shooting is incredibly tragic, and I have grave concern that we may see situations like this increase when the state’s concealed carry law goes into effect," Moreno said in a statement.

Moreno said the so-called "constitutional carry" law which takes effect Jul4 will make it harder for New Orleans Police to stop subjects suspected of illegally carrying firearms.

"I hope that legislation by Rep. Alonzo Knox (D) or Sen. Kirk Talbot (R) is approved so at least New Orleans will have some carve-out protections to ensure firearm enforcement in high-traffic areas," said Moreno. "These two legislators demonstrate that there is bipartisan support for common-sense regulations."
